The Over Unders

The Over Unders are an Eau Claire/Minneapolis Alt Rock four-piece comprised of brothers Sam (Guitar and Vocals) and Matthew (Drums) Hellman, bassist Jake Morley, and lead guitarist Ben Schwaller. Their fresh and enthusiastic take on classic rock n’ roll is often likened to their major influences who fall all along the diverse spectrum of power pop and classic alternative. Principal songwriter Sam Hellman’s favorites come through most, giving the majority of their tunes a “Big Star meets Replacements, by way of Gin Blossoms” vibe. Think Old 97’s and Ted Leo too, as these are common names mentioned when describing the Over Unders’ simple but complete sound. Perhaps what sets them apart from their indie peers most is their simultaneous willingness to shoot for the stars with anthemic rock songs that seek to emulate their heroes REM, and very fittingly, brother rock giants Oasis. Above all else, The Over Unders value well crafted songs that deliver honest confessions and observations about life. Their 2022 EP “No Soap Radio” went to work for them (Featuring “Rhonda” with 58K+ spotify streams), landing them a spot at legendary Minneapolis rock club 7th St. Entry, as well as a slot at Cadott, Wisconsin’s Rockfest. Now located in Minneapolis, the band is continuing to build their following off the release of their 2025 LP “Faces and Time.

Monarch

Monarch is a Twin Cities-based five piece rock band. With influences ranging from the heavy-psychedelia of the 60s and 70s, to the soothing lo-fi aesthetics of modern indie music. Whether you’re looking for some hard rocking head-bangers or some danceable funky grooves, you’ll find them at a Monarch show.

The Social Cues

Social Cues (Formerly John Forrest and The Model Citizens) is a four piece alternative rock band based in Minneapolis, MN. Owing their formation to a Craigslist ad put out by frontman Forrest Ward, the band began playing music together in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consisting of Forrest Ward on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Ben Schwaller on lead guitar, Druby Soho on bass guitar, and Mitchell Warner holding it all together on the drums, the band writes and performs music that resonates with those who occasionally feel isolated in the digital age

Get ready for a night of soaring hooks, gritty guitars, and unforgettable indie rock energy as The Over Unders headline an incredible lineup at Day Block Brewing on Saturday, July 25th from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. Joining them for the evening are fellow Twin Cities standouts Monarch and The Social Cues, making this a stacked showcase of some of the Midwest’s most exciting alternative rock talent.

Originally formed in Eau Claire and now based in Minneapolis, The Over Unders are a four-piece alt-rock band featuring brothers Sam and Matthew Hellman alongside bassist Jake Morley and guitarist Ben Schwaller. Drawing inspiration from legendary acts across the power pop and classic alternative spectrum, the band delivers a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Their music channels the melodic punch of Big Star, the emotional grit of The Replacements, and the jangly charm of Gin Blossoms, while also tapping into the anthemic spirit of R.E.M. and Oasis. Principal songwriter Sam Hellman crafts songs filled with heartfelt observations and honest storytelling, giving the band a timeless appeal that resonates with fans of classic and modern rock alike. Their 2022 EP No Soap Radio helped establish the group as a rising force in the regional scene, with tracks like “Rhonda” earning over 58,000 Spotify streams and helping land performances at iconic venues such as Minneapolis’ 7th St. Entry and Wisconsin’s Rockfest. Now, the band continues to build momentum behind their 2025 LP Faces and Time.

Opening the night is Monarch, a Twin Cities-based five-piece whose sound blends heavy psychedelic rock influences from the ‘60s and ‘70s with the dreamy textures of modern indie music. From thunderous riffs to funky grooves, Monarch delivers a dynamic live performance built to keep crowds moving.

Also appearing are The Social Cues, formerly known as John Forrest and The Model Citizens. Formed during the early days of the pandemic through a Craigslist ad posted by frontman Forrest Ward, the Minneapolis quartet creates emotionally charged alternative rock that speaks to the experience of isolation and connection in the digital age. Featuring Forrest Ward, Ben Schwaller, Druby Soho, and Mitchell Warner, the band combines introspective lyricism with driving instrumentation and memorable melodies.

Don’t miss this exciting night of local indie and alternative rock at Day Block Brewing — three outstanding bands, one stage, and an evening packed with energy, heart, and loud guitars.
